Mac's List: "Your Guide to 33 Portland Coworking Spaces"

September 23, 2019

"A social club and workspace for ambitious, diverse women, The Perlene is a members-only space. The carefully curated community of supportive women offers a variety of benefits such as classes, business discounts, a dedicated Slack channel, and a feminist library. The Perlene social memberships start at $175 per month, with dedicated desk memberships running up to $450 per month. Applications to The Perlene are considered on a monthly basis."

"Many women are also held back by less access to mentors, resources and opportunities to advance their careers, or feel ill at ease within the bro-culture of their workplace. Female-focused coworking offices seek to address some of these issues by providing amenities suited to women’s needs, as well as a calmer, safer environment for them and their families."

Littlestar started the Perlene because she wanted a sense of community. After all, it’s hard to make friends as an adult. People don’t always have a “sense of community and support,” Littlestar noted, when they don’t have families who live nearby or third spaces – like churches and community centers.

With the Perlene, Littlestar wanted to address that deep human need for community while creating a co-working space. She was reassured by women in the Portland area who craved a place similar to what she had been envisioning, where ambitious women could hang out and build authentic, meaningful relationships with one another.

The Perlene is a coworking space designed with a clear mission in mind. Its goal is to contribute to “a world where feminine leadership is the standard, women are empowered to define their futures, and we are all living full, satisfying, courageous lives.” There are many things that will strike you about this Hosford – Abernethy office space―from the lush interior to their tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the company’s history and its amenities and, most importantly, the strong emphasis on the social aspect of coworking.

What sets this feminist coworking space apart is two things. Firstly, it looks different. Everything is cut crystal and sequins, twinkle lights and cozy corners, flowers and faux fur, glam and beauty. I’m not typically a sparkly kind of gal (besides embracing glitter during my girls art projects), but it feels amazing to spend my workday in a place that feels inviting and feminine instead of sterile and industrial.

Per her business card, Erin (Kiki) Teal Littlestar is all about #bossbitches. The 33-year-old just opened the Perlene, a workspace and social club for women in inner Southeast Portland. The only club of its kind in the city, it launched in January as a place to hustle, organize, and smash the patriarchy—and then sip some bubbly while crafting.

In nine months, a woman can birth a baby. But Kiki Littlestar chose to spend nine months birthing something else: a dedicated women-only workspace and social club called the Perlene.

Littlestar came up with the idea of creating a women's space last March. As a life coach, she often heard from her female clients about having a lack of career support and workspaces. As Trump's popularity grew, she felt inspired to do something to make the world a little bit better.
