Today we celebrate the birthday of our patron saint, Miriam Pearline Teal Malacord, aka "Mama Jo." Mama Jo was the grandmother of our owner and founder Kiki Littlestar. She was a smart, stubborn, beautiful Texan woman with a heart of gold and plenty of flaws. She was a wildly talented artist, made the best gumbo in the world, and could often be found in the kitchen around midnight with a cigarette in one hand and a pimento cheese sandwich in the other. In her early twenties she changed her name to Jo as a tribute to her favorite fiercely independent literary character from Little Women.
When Kiki was considering names for her feminine dream space, she knew that she wanted it to have a personality, to be a representation of the women who would inhabit it. It needed to be strongly feminine, one of a kind, a little irreverent, with a hint vintage flair and plenty of glamour. When the name came to Kiki, she laughed out loud, because it was almost too perfect. Like Mama Jo, Kiki also chose her own name... a rite of passage that has become a tradition for many Perlenas.
Three cheers for Mama Jo!
